Description : The Abyssinian Baptist Church is among the most famous African-American churches in New York City. Their mission is to win more souls for Christ through evangelism, pastoral care, Christian education, social service delivery, and community development.
The church traces its roots to 1808, when black parishioners left the First Baptist Church Of New York in protest over racially segregated seating. Under the guidance of the congregation's legendary Rev. Dr. Adam Clayton Powell, Sr. (1865-1953), the current church campus was dedicated in 1923. The buildings are handsome, classical structures with stained glass windows and various interesting architectural highlights. In addition to worship, the church's facilities are often used for art exhibits, performances, workshops and other programs.
The church is often progressive in its outreach to various communities by addressing a variety of issues like homelessness, science education and AIDS prevention, among others. |
