Description :
Established in 1983 and located in the heart of Greenwich Village, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center has grown to become the largest LGBT multi-service organization on the East Coast and second largest LGBT community center in the world. They provide a home for the birth, nurture and celebration of New York’s LGBT organizations, institutions and culture.
Their home is the former Food & Maritime Trades High School, which the city sold to the then-new Lesbian & Gay Community Services Center, Inc., for $1.5 million. In its first year, 60 groups met regularly at the center.
Every week, 6,000 people visit the center, and more than 300 groups meet there. The center also provides groundbreaking social service, public policy, educational and cultural/recreational programs. In addition, they serve as an incubator for the grassroots groups that meet there. |
